This project aims to provide objective measurement of public transportation systems in order to inform users and community groups about service dependability. Using data feeds from GPS enabled vehicles and other transportation infrastructure The Open Bus collects, processes and disseminates data related to public transportation.
By distributing data to community organizations and individuals, this project hopes to improve accountability in public transportation service, and promote greater equality in access.
The Open Bus also hopes to provide a platform to connect transit users, enabling them to share information about the services they use, and communicate ideas to government about ways to improve urban transportation.
To this point, The Open Bus's coverage is limited to New York City. Data is freely available for the New York City bus system, and the New York City bike share system.
